The meaning of the name “Jjimjilbang” is ‘sauna room’, but actually it’s kind of a small multiplex and really popular place to Koreans. You can enjoy not only sauna or spa, but also there are swimming pool, gym, PC labs, restaurants, and even theater. Regardless of age or sex, many people want to go there for several reasons, to relax their bodies or to get rid of stress, or for some people it is a good place having a fun time with their friends or families. Average entrance fee for Jjimjilbang is about $10, and you need to pay extra money for your snack and drinks.

◈How to use Jjimjilbang

Before go to the Jjimjilbang, don’t forget to bring a change of clothes with you. If you pay the entrance fee, the receptionist will give you the towels, clothes (T-shirt and shorts) and the key for locker room. Go to the locker room, and change the clothes. If you want to take a short shower before enter the sauna, you can do that because locker room and spa is connected. After changing clothes, you can go to the public zone. There are various types of sauna room, so you can choose any of them. You can have some food and drinks, and also enjoy other facilities like PC room, massage room, gym, etc. After you enjoy the sauna, you will certainly want to take a shower because of sweat. In Jjimjilbang, you have to use the public bath. Doing hot tub with your friends and rubbing off each other’s dust is really interesting experience. After you fully enjoy the Jjimjilbang, just return the clothes and key.

◈Snacks in Jjimjilbang

The most famous snack in Jjimjilbang is “Sik-hye”, Korean traditional drink. It is a kind of a sweet drink made from fermented rice. Moreover, when it is half frozen, it tastes better. The baked egg, called “Maekbanseok Egg” is very good combination with Sik-hye. Also, a red-bean sherbet, called “Patbingsu” is really popular snack, because you may want to cool off your body after sweating from sauna.
